ZTO Motorsports Night Big Success at Hamlin Speedway, Z-Man Wins First Feature at Accord Mid-Week Show
by Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
West Park, NY - Thirteen year old driving talent Zach O'Connell sped to his first career feature event win Wednesday night at the Accord Speedway as he battled with racers from the Odessey division to secure his initial triumph. O'Connell, in only his second season of racing, was switched to the division when he was the lone Slingshot driver to sign in for the speedway's opening night "Midweek Madness" activities, and track officials felt the two racing classes were compatible with each other to allow them to race together. The event also marked the first time the young racer competed on a track a quarter mile in distance.
In a nip and tuck battle with 2006 Quad Champ Danny Cross, O'Connell raced across the finish line first despite numerous attempts from Cross to wrest the lead away from the young West Park, New York driver, known to all his racing fans as the "Z-Man."
It has been a busy time for the O'Connell family as the ZTO Motorsports Team sponsored the racing events last Saturday evening at the Hamlin Speedway and the racing activity was highlighted by a 25-lap Junior Slingshot feature event eventually won by Mackenize Brink. O'Connell placed seventh in the feature after being spun out late in the race, and then raced from the rear to record the seventh place finish.
The ZTO Motorsports Team celebrated the sixty-fifth birthday of Grandpa Ted Humphries as part of the acivity at the Hamlin track and racers and fans alike were treated to birthday cake, courtesy of the ZTO Motorsports Team.
O'Connell, who was the 2006 Rookie of the Year at the Hamlin facility, first became interested in racing when his parents, Paul and Brenda, took him to the Accord races. He fell in love with racing in a heartbeat and his parents made the decision to purchase a car for the "Z-Man," although Mom was a little hesitant at first. Racing at both Hamlin and Accord, the young driver is earning high marks for his racing endeavors.
ZTO Motorsports would like to thank the great supporting cast of sponsors who have come on board with the relatively new racing team. The list includes, Apple Greens Golf Course, NAPA D&D of Highland, Trailer King, Frozen Rainbow, Jim Young Photography, Gross Graphics, Hig-Fab, Ulster Motorsports, Escopus Sportsman Club, Sabia, Dynamic Impressions Ink and Tri States Studios.
The "Z-Man" will be in action every Wednesday at Accord and Saturdays at Hamlin for the remainder of the 2007 season. For further updates regarding Zach O'Connell and the ZTO Motorsports team log onto their website at: www.zacharyoconnell.com |
